A sculptor based in Normandy, Lionel Sabatté is known for his use of raw and unexpected materials, such as dust, fingernails and fragments of dead trees. His work explores transformation and the passage of time, questioning our relationship with the environment.

In Ouistreham, the artist sculpts Caen stone, a material emblematic of the region’s development, which he has chosen straight from the quarry. He has created a mix of aquatic and animal forms, including sea turtles and flatfish, resembling fossils from a lost ocean. Engraved and notched, the blocks are arranged according to the points of the compass, like a compass rose, a mineral and organic compass.

For the classical garden in Parc Claude Decaen, he created a bronze sculpture: a stalagmite-shaped base topped by a seabird facing the coast.

The work creates a link between heritage and nature in perpetual metamorphosis.
